THE TERRITORY
"They did not flee from war: never weary of defending their freedom, even though unsuccessfully, they would rather be conquered than yield” (Livio,x,31.14)"

"In the south central part of the Italian peninsula, nestling in the foothills of the Campania and Molise Appenines and the mountain range of Matese, the Samnites’ territory was named Safinim after its inhabitants, as they called themselves Safineis. In Latin Safinim became Samnium by assimilation, and the term Samnites was used to name its inhabitants. After more than two thousand years, the history of the Samnites still captivates those trying to look into the events underlying the expansion of most Italic people in the last centuries before Christ. At the time, the Samnites managed to influence and change the course of history on many occasions. Their history mixed with that of other peoples, such as the Etruscans, the Greek, the Celts and, in an almost endless conflict, the Romans. They were by far the most stubborn and determined people of the peninsula. Their freedom was a sacred matter and they fought strenuously to defend it”

In the town of Castelvenere, located in the heart of the old Benevento Samnium, agriculture – namely grape and olive tree cultivation - develops in this context of Oscan and Samnite stories, on the most vine-grown soil of the ancient and re-born Campania Felix. Farming is therefore supported by a long tradition of ancient vineyards and cultivars that have been re-planted by local people who share the same tenacious temperament as the SAMNITES and have a deep knowledge of their land, guarding jealously their traditions, history and roots against an increasingly globalised world.
